Western Area-Freetown

Tacugama Chimp Sanctuary

Just few kilometers away from central Freetown, at the mountaintop, the lush vegetation has provided an ideal sanctuary for some of the endangered species of the West African green forest belt. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to rescued chimps. Both the savanna grassland in the north and the dense rainforest in the southeast with their beautiful landscape. The sanctuary also holds eco-lodges for relaxation in the jungle of mountainous Freetown.

Freetown City Centre

Freetown, the capital city, offers a mixture of landmarks and a cauldron of eye catching historical monuments. From Fourah Bay College University, the first institution of higher learning in West African. The Freetown cotton tree is a historic symbol and the city’s most famous landmark, is said to have existed long before it was made popular in 1787 when the first free slaves arrived in Sierra Leone. Both iconographic symbols represent the emancipation of the ordinary man from oppression.

Freetown Peninsula

The Peninsula provides the backdrop of the mountainous rainforest with lush vegetation that sprawls towards the pristine beaches on the Atlantic coast.

Bunce Island & Tassoh Island

These Islands are all within a couple of hours boat ride form Freetown all represent a part of Sierra Leone’s national identity. Crumbling walls of old slave fortresses, torture chambers, rusted canons lying scattered around are all a stark reminder of what transpired on these islands in the 18th century.

Banana Island

The Island is made up of three smaller islands- Banana Island, Ricketts and Mes Mieu. These Islands holds a rich history that stretches back to the slave trade. On the Island, one could visibly find traces of the barbaric slave trade.

Gola Forest

This is the biggest national park in the tropical evergreen rain forest in eastern Sierra Leone. This protected area stretches over 71 thousand hectors and falls partly in Kenema, Kailahun and Pujenhun districts. The forest is home to a rich diversity of animals, and it is an ideal place for eco-tourism.

Tiwai Island

This forest reserve hosts some of the rarest animals like the elusive pigmy hippopotamus, the Diana & Colobus monkeys. The Island has a high concentration and diversity of primates.
